(Updated March 4, 2024).  Here’s an exclusive listing of all 260 rap and hip-hop albums (or albums by rappers) that have reached Number One on the Billboard 200, from the first one in March 1987, the Beastie Boys’ Licensed To Ill, to the most recent as of the chart dated February 24, 2024: Vultures 1 by Kanye West & Ty Dolla $ign.

You won’t find a more complete and accurate listing of rap/hip-hop albums that have topped the album chart anywhere but here on djrobblog.

Rap legends from top left (clockwise): Drake, Kanye West, Eminem and Jay-Z.  Between them, they’ve had 48 Number One albums.

Rap music (and hip-hop in general, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2023) first appeared on the Billboard charts in the late 1970s, but didn’t really become mainstream until nearly a decade later when icons like Run-DMC, L.L. Cool J and Beastie Boys made it more accessible to suburban (white) teenagers.

Not surprisingly, the Beasties’ rock-leaning brand of rap was the first to top Billboard’s main album chart. But it wasn’t long before artists like NWA, Tupac Shakur and The Notorious B.I.G. blew the doors wide open.

In the 37 years since the Beasties’ triumph, 260 albums that qualify as rap/hip-hop/trap or which were recorded by artists who primarily identify as hip-hop have topped the chart, and djrobblog has tallied all of them below.

(Clockwise from top left): Cardi B, Nicki Minaj, Lauryn Hill, Eve and Foxy Brown are the only female rappers to have achieved No. 1 albums (Minaj now has three).

The albums below are listed in chronological order by title, artist and the chart date they first reached Number One, along with a running count of the number of #1 albums for the artist.  (Note: the count does NOT represent the total album output of any artist, just the running count of those that have reached #1 on the Billboard 200.)

A rap/hip-hop No. 1 leaderboard follows the tally at the end of the article.

How albums qualify for the below list:

Albums that are rap, trap and/or hip-hop in nature and have topped the “Billboard 200”—the industry’s authoritative weekly ranking of the most consumed albums in the U.S.—are what’s listed below. Soundtrack albums that are predominantly hip-hop in nature are included in this historic recap.

However, albums that only contain a small percentage of rap or hip-hop songs are excluded, as are R&B, pop or country albums in which rap artists mainly serve in featured roles.

Number One albums recorded by artists that primarily identify as rappers are included on the list, even if the artist’s product deviates from hip-hop, as was the case with Drake’s However, Nevermind, which consisted primarily of house music and Drake singing, not rapping. This caveat excludes former rappers such as Machine Gun Kelly, who have officially shed the rap label and no longer record as hip-hop artists (and, therefore, are no longer tallied on this list).

No Number Ones: These 50 famous rappers have never had a No. 1 album.

The year with the most No. 1 rap/hip-hop albums was 2018 with 18, followed by 2019 (17) and 2020 (16).

Astonishingly, only six hip-hop albums reached No. 1 in 2023, the lowest in a calendar year since 2014 (five). However, 2024 got off to an early start for hip-hop with 21 Savage’s crowning in January and the first new No. 1 album of the year.

Enjoy the below list and relive some hip-hop history (and remember, the tally after each artist’s name is for their No. 1 albums only). There’s a Spotify playlist including a track from each of these albums at the bottom of the list.
