(June 27, 2021). Looks like Cardi B will have to be doubly careful in the near future about which kids she allows to see her infamous “WAP” video.
That’s because she confirmed she’s pregnant with Baby No. 2 via a very revealing sheer and form-fitting outfit while performing with husband Offset and his group Migos on Sunday’s BET Awards.
Within minutes of the performance, Twitter came alive with tweets and hashtags about Cardi’s announcement, with several folks drawing connections to her recent break from social media and others speculating that her second album release may be imminent with the big reveal mimicking what she did prior to her first album’s release in 2018.
Indeed this wasn’t the first time Cardi revealed – or better yet, confirmed – a pregnancy in public fashion like this. She confirmed she was carrying nearly 3-year-old daughter Kulture during a performance on SNL back in 2018.
And I remember when artists’ album reveals used to be the biggest news one could expect in the music biz.
It’s hard to say that someone stole the show just 25 minutes into a scheduled 3-hour telecast, but it’s likely that Cardi’s second pregnancy – and the baby bump she sported while twerking on stage with hubby – will be the most talked about aspect of this year’s awards; more so than host Taraji P Henson’s miraculous ability to go from huge 1970s’ style afro to long flowing locks in the span of 15 minutes (I counted about five wig changes in the first 50 minutes), more than Kirk Franklin’s eye-popping opening performance with Lil Baby, or even more than Queen Latifah being given her flowers as this year’s recipient of the Lifetime Achievement award.
Of course, this article was published before Lil Nas X was scheduled to perform, so all bets might be off by the time the “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” rapper graces the stage.
When BET announced that this year’s awards were going to be a celebration of women, few viewers – if any – could have had this announcement in mind.
Cardi was nominated for five awards – including best female hip-hop artist, and three awards for ”WAP”: best collaboration (with Megan Thee Stallion), viewers choice award, and video of the year. Her most recent No. 1 single, “Up,” joined “WAP” in the video of the year category.
As of this writing, Cardi had only taken home one of those awards (best video for “WAP”) But she definitely took home the Twitter award for most popular hashtag of the night.
And the night was still young…
Congratulations to Cardi B and Offset…and to Kulture on their future addition to the fam!
As advertised, tonight’s BET Awards were definitely one for the “culture.”
